WELCOME TO TEXAS
FELLOW SCOT–BRODY!

The most valuable qualities possessed by Highland Ponies are their sturdy constitution, keen intelligence, and concentrated vitality, all of which are common to the entire breed. The most favoured colour is dun and dark cream, thought the commonest colour is grey. The eel strip along the back is a typical feature, but is not always present.

DEAR MS. SCHWAB & TEXAS SCOTTISH FESTIVAL & HIGHLAND GAMES,

Her Majesty the Queen has been a great ambassador for the Highland Pony Breed, being the Patron of the Highland Pony Society and also being an active breeder of a working herd on Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The first Balmoral prefix registered pony was in 1952. However in 2007 The Queen decided to allocate an area on Balmoral Estate to move all of her breeding Highland Ponies and young stock to. There was already a small herd of trekking/working ponies on the estate but the breeding stock were in various locations over the UK at this point. Invergelder farm on Balmoral Estate took on a new look when the steading buildings were converted into stables and yards for the Balmoral Highland Pony Stud to take form.

The stud has a number of Stallions that are available for AI and a small selection of visiting mares throughout the breeding season. Her Majesty is aware of the importance of making her boys available to breed as the Highland Pony is on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust ‘watch list’
The Highland Pony demand regularly out weighs the supply and we have to be mindful of this. The popularity of this versatile breed is world wide and The Queen has sold ponies and frozen semen as far a field as, France, The USA and New Zealand.

The Highland Pony Society has a super website to log on to which is very informative. You can find out everything there is to know about the breed and the breeders with an extremely helpful secretary and council available to answer any of your questions about this wonderful breed.

Please do not be shy, ask the question, no matter how silly it may sound. We will have the answer for you.

Thank you for taking the time to read about the Highland Pony.

Sylvia Ormiston MVO
Stud Manager, Balmoral Estate.
